hey guys, i'm sorry we haven't been making sets very much lately, we'll start being regular again. c:
now i know it's awkward for some girls to talk about the period, but sometimes it needs to be talked about.
i personally have really bad periods, and i know how hard it can be to deal with them.
so here are some tips on how to deal with your period, in general && how to deal with it at school, cause i know how hard that can be too.
-
DEALiNG WiTH YOUR PERiOD iN GENERAL;
» MiNiMiZE YOUR CRAMPS && DiSCOMFORT;
O1. TAKE PAiN KiLLERS;
ibuprofen is usually just as good as things like midol and can be obtained over the counter. however, different things work for different people.
O2. TRY ALTERNATiVE METHODS;
use Clary Sage oil and rub it into your stomach. It supports estrogen production and acts on the pituitary gland to prevent cramps. cell salts are a good option too. when you get cramps, take them every 5 - 1O minutes until the pain stops. you can also take a heating pad and place it over stomach where the pain is, or take a warm bubble bath. { the heating pad really helps me }
O3. ALTER YOUR DiET;
try to incorporate more potassium into your diet by eating foods such as bananas. avoid salty and sugary foods. { although chocolate does seem to help some people so try that too }
O4. GET PLENTY OF REST;
it will keep your body in balance and you won't feel as bad. If you can, take a day off to relieve stress, since that's what makes your flow heavier. { stress also makes cramps 1OO times worse. if you feel stressed while on your period, close your eyes, breathe slowly, and calm your body. it works, trust me. }
O5. ENGAGE iN PHYSiCAL ACTiViTY;
if you're able to, exercise will make your period shorter. you might want to exercise while taking a pain medicine. however, sports may also make your stomach pains worse, so assess the situation as needed.
O6. USE GOOD QUALiTY PERiOD PANTiES THAT WiLL SUPPORT YOUR LOWER ABDOMEN AND HELP YOU TO RELAX.
» ALWAYS BE PREPARED;
O1. ALWAYS KEEP A TAMPON OR PAD WiTH YOU;
even if it's not that time of the month, you should still carry one with you just in case. panty liners are the most convenient as they are smaller, easy to carry and should hold the flow of blood until you can obtain a pad.
O2. AVOiD STAiNiNG DURiNG PERiODS;
you can use special panties made for periods called Adira Period Panties. they are leak-proof and comfortable. { i've never personally used these but i've heard they're great }
O3. NEVER TAKE A CHANCE iF YOU THiNK YOU MiGHT LEAK;
what you may find helpful is if you wear your ugly-month-time panties with your pad / tampon and then you wear black, tight, lady's boxers. not only does it keep the pad/tampon safe from slipping or moving but if you leak, it contains it a lot more efficiently. it's just a good money and time saver as an alternative to period panties.
O4. WEAR A MENSTRUAL CUP OR A SOFT - CUP;
these are internal like tampons, but are far safer and more hygienic so they can be used when not on your period. they can also be worn for up to 12 hours, so you can wear these on the days leading up to your period to avoid being caught without protection or messing up your underwear. they can be worn overnight during light to heavy flow { and are especially good for women with heavy flow } , and during sports including swimming. these can also help lessen flow and cramps. cups are also cheaper and environmentally friendly, so ethical companies offer many positive options. { again, never used one myself but heard they're good }
O5. WEAR BLACK, RED, OR BROWN UNDERWEAR;
people will be less likely to notice you have your period. also, try changing your pad before gym and try to wear pads without wings. it will be much harder for girls to tell that you have your period if you're wearing a pad without wings, although your pad may not stay in place very well and stain your underwear. however, most girls should be pretty understanding - they go through it too! you can also try changing your pants or shorts wearing a long t-shirt, if you prefer.
O6. TELL A PARENT OR GUARDiAN;
it would be better if you tell someone so they can tell you what to do or help you get through it. if you feel embarrassed to tell them, just remember that every girl has to go through this.
O7. KEEP TRACK OF YOUR PERiOD;
try to keep track of how long you have your period, when it starts and ends, and how heavy the flow is. if your period lasts longer than 10 days, consult your gynecologist. tracking your menstrual cycle will not only give you a heads-up when your period is due, but will help you to know when you are fertile and if any complications or infections arise. if you have an iPod / iPhone, you can download certain apps that help you track your period and other various symptoms. a really good one is Pink Pad. you can make a password so nobody else can get into it. { i'm actually about to get this app cx }
O8. WARN PEOPLE YOU ARE CLOSE TO AHEAD OF TiME;
let them know you might be moody so they can prepare and take caution. part of maturing into womanhood, though, is learning to manage your moods. if you experience severe mood swings, tell your doctor as you may need some help with an imbalance.
O9. HAVE COMFORTABLE CLOTHES;
most women would prefer not to wear uncomfortable clothing while having their period. wear some sweat pants and a sweatshirt or anything else that feels comfortable, but don't make it too obvious. you can just wear black pants and keep a jacket around in case you stain your pants. when that happens, you can just tie it around your waist.
» HAVE A POSiTiVE ATTiTUDE;
O1. KNOW THAT PERiODS ARE ONLY AS GOOD OR AS BAD AS YOU MAKE THEM;
they reveal that you're fertile and healthy. there is nothing embarrassing or gross about having one's period and you can still engage in most activities. positive thinking women learn to manage their period and therefore do not grow as frustrated with this time of the month, rather than women who stress and spend their life suffering with their periods. with knowledge and experience, we all learn how to best care for our bodies.
O2. iGNORE THE BRAiNWASHiNG;
too many people will tell you periods are bad, but don't let their issues effect how you feel. advertising and packing will also try to convince you periods are inconvenient or embarrassing, but they really are not. such negative messages can make girls / women feel bad about their period and in turn, they wrongly assume there is nothing to do about the inevitable. the more informed and the better you feel about periods, the easier they are to handle. you'll have them most of your life, so it is best to take it in stride and view it in a positive light!
DEALiNG WiTH YOUR PERiOD AT SCHOOL;
O1. COME TO SCHOOL ALL FRESH AND CLEAN;
you should have a clean pair of undies. change your feminine product often enough to avoid smelling bad and to help, wear perfume.
O2. GO TO THE BATHROOM EVERY 3 - 4 HOURS;
this way, you can check for leaks and change your feminine product if needed. if this is annoying, try wearing a high absorbency tampon so you can go through the whole school day, but remember that it is not so safe to use a tampon for more than 8 consistent hours. if you're not comfortable with a tampon, wear a pad but change it often as it could retain smell. { i know talking about the smell from periods is really gross and nobody wants to hear it, but it's something you need to address and take care of }
O3. DON'T SWEAT iT;
every girl has to go through it sometime if she hasn't already. chances are that some of the girls in your class have their periods and feel the same way.
O4. DON'T BE EMBARRASSED EiTHER;
there is no reason to be embarrassed about your period. it is just a part of life and it happens. if you have a situation and need help, just ask your female teacher / secretary / nurse / friend.
O5. ALWAYS BE PREPARED;
if you don't know when your period is due then you should always carry some extra pads / tampons in a small case in your backpack / locker / purse. you never know! you don't want to be surprised with a big red stain on your pants. if you suffer from cramps, you should carry a mini sized tylenol, advil, midol, pampren, etc.
» TiPS;
» if your stomach is bloated or some of your skinny jeans don't fit during your period, don't worry. it is a natural occurrence and can be reduced by taking advil or midol.
» for the heavy flow days, use boxer or boy-fit period panties to give you complete protection from staining.
» drinking milk is great for reducing cramps. it helps restore the vitamins you might have lost. you might have heard that cold things aren't good for you. that may not always be true. some think that you should stay away from sugary and cold items, but cold things that contain milk like ice cream may be good for your cramps.
» keep an extra pair of underwear if you have an emergency at school and need to change right away.
» at the moment, if you don't have a pad, use folded toilet paper or tissues until you make your way down to the office, nurse's room, or gym teacher's room to get one. schools always supply pads.
» don't let your period get in the way of your day. school can still be fun even when you are menstruating!
-
so i really hope those tips help you when you're on your period. just remember, don't be embarrassed to talk about it, it's a totally natural thing and every girl has to go through it, you're not alone!
